Race Matters

I heard a perfect Vermont story tonight while waiting around the field house at UVM for my son to be observed by a bunch of coaches, so he could be picked by a team and start playing Little League baseball.

I started talking with this striking-looking woman I’ve seen around his school, who also was waiting while her kid was being judged. Born in the Phillippines, she came to the U.S. at age 14 and settled in California. Ultimately, she said, her husband’s cancer research brought them to this area.

“Coming east must have been quite a change,? I said, and she said that solely because of her arrival, the Asian population in the Vermont census jumped an entire per cent that year.
